Knee replacement, also known as knee arthroplasty is done to replace the weight-bearing area of the knee to reduce pain and improve function. It is of two types - total and partial.

The post-operative instructions may include-
Start the physical movement of the leg as soon as possible after the surgery.
The patient may use aids like crutches or canes for first few weeks. Gradually, he/she will be able to walk without any help.
Exercise must be done at least for 2 months after the surgery, as advised by the physical therapist.
Take all the medications as advised.
There may be mild to moderate swelling for 3-6 months after the surgery; the patient is advised to do compression with ice packs and elevating the legs.
