Breast Cancer Surgery

Patient with breast cancer has some types of surgery. There are different types of breast cancer surgery depending on the condition. Surgery may be done to:

  • Prevent cancer from spreading in breast.
  • Find out either the tumor is benign or cancerous.
  • Decide the exact stage of cancer.
  •  Relieve the symptoms of cancer.

There are mainly two types of Breast Cancer Surgery:

  • Lumpectomy- (also called Partial Mastectomy) a surgery in which only the tumor and surrounding tissues are removed. This surgery is adequate for women with early stage of cancer.
  • Mastectomy- a surgery in which the entire breast are removed along with nipples areola, Sentinel and lymph nodes.

Symptoms of Breast Cancer

The most common symptoms of breast cancer include:

  • Feeling a lump or mass in the breast or armpit.
  • Swelling of all parts of breast.
  • Redness & thickening of breast skin.
  • Breast Pain.
  • Breast skin irritation.
  • Nipple discharge.

Pre-Procedure of Breast Cancer

Mostly breast cancer is found after appearing of symptoms, if you have symptoms of breast cancer then consult your doctor, the doctor will prescribe some tests to diagnose the cancer.

The tests are following:

  • Breast ultrasound
  • Mammogram
  • Breast MRI scan
  • Breast Biopsy


Breast Cancer Procedure

If the patient has been diagnosed with breast cancer, the doctor will discuss about the treatment plan with her. Your treatment plans will depend on type of breast cancer, its stage and any particular condition.

The patient is given anesthesia and team of surgeon will perform the surgery. At the time of surgery, pathologist will examine the tissue removed from the body and provide instant information to the surgeon to remove the infected part.

Post-Procedure of Breast Cancer 

After the surgery pain killers and medicines are given to reduce the operative pain, and a rehabilitation team will look after the patient. After surgery patient may stay for 2-3 days in the hospital.
